Rest and Recharge ~~ Winter's Gift - January 2026

JANUARY 2026 BLOG
In the depth of winter, I finally learned that there was in me an invincible summer.
Albert Camus
According to Chinese medicine, winter is a time to stay warm and eat warm, nourishing foods such as soups, stews, root vegetables, dark leafy greens, kidney and black beans, whole grains, and walnuts. Seasonal foods help our bodies adjust to weather and environmental changes. Animals hibernate in winter. We, too, would be wise to slow down and hibernate at times in winter, coming home to the place of stillness within, where we can hear the “still, small voice.”
Making time for rest in winter helps replenish our life force energy (chi, qi) and our internal physical, mental, emotional, and spiritual reserves. These will then be available to support new growth and activities in spring. My winter challenge has repeatedly been to slow my pace. I am recognizing now, more than before, how slowing down provides renewal time for my whole being – body, mind, emotions, and soul or life force. Slowing down also reminds me of what still has heart and meaning in my life.
Self-care practices also shift with seasonal changes. In winter, practices become slower and more internalized. Going to bed earlier and getting up a bit later helps conserve warmth and our vital chi. Movement practices will help move stagnant energy from reduced activity in winter. Some self-care practices (meditation, yoga, qigong) bring opportunities for reflection and introspection. During these practices, we can plant seeds of intention we want to see grow and blossom in the spring.
Here are some practices to consider for self-renewal this winter:
Find goodness daily through a phone call, a shared smile, reading, time with family or friends, or connecting with Mother Nature
Laugh often. Surround yourself with cheerful activities and people, pets, art, music, dancing, hobbies, etc.
Keep a gratitude journal daily, noting three things you are grateful for. Gratitude is the fastest way to experience joy.
Tell those you love that you love them. Receive and absorb love from others whenever and however it is extended,
Take trips to new locations, but NOT guilt trips.
Keep learning about what piques your curiosity. Active minds are healthier minds.
The only person with you your entire life is YOU. Be alive while you are alive. Let tears happen; they water your soul and enable it to grow. Be compassionate with yourself and others.
Have a blessed new year filled with good health, peace, joy, new adventures, and opportunities that bring unexpected moments of love and Light shared with others.
